Balance Spring
Definition
What is Balance Spring?
Balance Spring, also known as a watch spring or hairspring, is an essential part of the watch mechanism which balances the force of the watch’s mainspring. It is closely related to a watch’s accuracy and precision.
The watch Balance Spring works in tandem with the balance wheel to help regulate the watch’s timekeeping by oscillating back and forth within a controlled manner. A watch Balance Spring is made from a thin strip of metal which coils back upon itself and is held in the center by an outermost coil called the stud.
The watch Balance Spring’s oscillations are affected by changing temperatures which make it difficult to keep watch time precisely. To counter this, watchmakers have developed watch balance springs with intricate configurations that help maintain accuracy during temperature changes or shocks. By using advanced materials and complex designs, watches can now be designed with excellent timekeeping abilities for any occasion or environment.
Without watch balance springs, modern precision watches would not be able to exist as we know them today!
