Helium Escape Valve

Definition

What is a Helium Escape Valve in Watches?

A helium escape valve is a specialized feature found in some professional dive watches designed for saturation diving. It allows helium gas, which can accumulate during prolonged deep dives, to escape safely from the watch to prevent damage.

How it Works: During saturation diving, divers breathe a helium-oxygen mixture. Helium atoms, being the smallest element, can penetrate the watch’s seals and enter the case. As the diver ascends and the pressure decreases, the trapped helium inside the watch expands. Without a helium escape valve, the pressure difference could damage the watch.
